Research

24 October 2008

The Northern Ireland Judicial Appointments Commission ("the Commission") has published research papers into the barriers and disincentives to judicial office.

This independent research was carried out by the School of Law, Queens University Belfast ("QUB") and the Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency ("NISRA") between April 2007 and June 2008.

The research is a direct response to needs identified by the Commission’s Chairman, the Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland, Sir Brian Kerr, at the organisation’s launch.

Sir Brian had made it clear at that time that there was a need for the Commission to "identify disincentives, speak to those eligible to apply, to those who will do so in the future and to those who are interested in securing a robust and reflective judiciary."

The research will be used to inform the Commission’s future work.
